Saratoga Ginkgo* (Ginkgo biloba 'Saratoga') is a truly elegant variety with the most unique elongated pendulous leaves, stunning pyramidal form, and consistent golden fall color. This desirable male cultivar does not produce fruit, making it a great choice for home landscapes.

The Saratoga Ginkgo has emerald green foliage throughout the season, which turns an outstanding gold in the fall. The large fan-shaped leaves are the most distinctive feature of this tree. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant, and the furrowed gray bark is not particularly outstanding.

Saratoga Ginkgo is an open deciduous tree with a refined pyramidal form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. This is a relatively low-maintenance tree, best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. Deer typically leave this plant alone, and it has no significant negative characteristics.

At maturity, the Saratoga Ginkgo will grow to be about 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide. It has a high canopy with a typical clearance of 8 feet from the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. This tree grows at a slow rate but can be expected to live to a ripe old age of 150 years or more, making it a true heritage tree for future generations.

The Saratoga Ginkgo is very cold tolerant, surviving in climates hardy to -30°F, and is an easy-to-grow pyramidal Ginkgo. It is highly adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and can thrive in a variety of soil types and pH levels. This tree is also highly tolerant of urban pollution and can even thrive in inner-city environments.

Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect the Saratoga Ginkgo in exposed locations. With its outstanding amber and gold fall colors and lack of fruit production, this is a truly exceptional variety of Ginkgo biloba that is sure to make a statement in any home landscape.
